With the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8 and a new Apple Watch SE, Apple has revamped its smartwatch in a big way. The Apple Watch Ultra offers the most innovation, with the Series 8 primarily focused on new temperature sensors and crash detection.
Unlike its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 8 now features a temperature sensor that aims to help women with cycle tracking by allowing the Apple Watch to predict ovulation during a cycle based on changes in body temperature. Apple installs a temperature sensor on the back of the watch and one at the top, directly below the display. The purpose of this combination is to improve measurement accuracy by taking into account external influences during measurement. At night, the Apple Watch 8 measures body temperature every 5 seconds with an anomaly of 0.1 °C.
Features like ECG and blood oxygen measurement are still available with the Apple Watch Series 8. With the 41 and 45 mm nothing has changed on the housing and it is still protected from dust according to IP6X.
