Maxell’s Innovative Heat Resistant CR History - EE Times

Maxell succeeded to commercialize their first Silver Oxide button battery in Japan in 1976.  Various technologies and battery designs have been developed since that time, one of which is Maxell’s most successful Heat Resistant CRHR Coin Cell Battery.  Designed for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) this product line is one of the most innovative and robust technologies in the Maxell product lineup.

These batteries are designed into monitoring devices which are inserted within automobile tires and are required to operate in extremely harsh environments. With temperatures ranging between –40oC and +125 oC, gravitational acceleration of 2,000G, and speeds up to 300km/h these batteries are designed to withstand incredibly rugged conditions.  As an expert in the field of batteries, Maxell has selected unique materials and applied proprietary technology for uniform Mixing, Dispersion & Sealing (forming) to prevent leakage of liquids while achieving long term stability and excellent performance.

CRHR Advanced Technology Features: 10 Years’ Operating Performance & Wide Operating Temperature Range

High Sealing Property – Crimping seal technology is a critical feature in the design of coin cells, and it was once considered unrealistic to achieve 10 years’ life compared to laser sealing. However, Maxell realized over 10 years’ life adopting brand-new gasket material with crimping seal configuration that was achieved through CAE (Computer Aided Engineering). This feasible crimping technology contributes to higher capacity retention and low impedance throughout 10 years of field use.

Wide Operating Temperature Range – Maxell has adopted a unique surface treatment on the lithium electrode enabling a boost in reactivity which allows higher current load even over low temperature range.  The Electrolyte solution is optimized to have stable performance at lower temperature and prevents deterioration in higher temperature conditions, even greater than 100 deg.C.

2,000G Shock Durability – Conventional lithium coin battery technology does not support long term discharge stability   when subjected to continuous shock and vibration which can cause internal material damage and shorten the battery life.   Therefore, our Shock-Durable design was a key component to successful development of the TPMS battery. Maxell’s CRHR technology achieved feasibility up to 2,000G by adopting durable materials and a new innovative electrical contact configuration to maintain stable current output even under extreme shock and vibration conditions.

New Development: HRS Technology Sensor technology is a key driver for next-generation vehicles. The number of sensors installed in vehicles will increase toward advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and control-autonomous vehicles. One of the advanced technologies is the Smart Tire concept where the sensor will detect speed change, body turning, tire slip, and road condition by direct monitoring of the tire surface.

Maxell has developed CR2032HRS that has even greater durability for more extreme mechanical shock so this rugged coin cell battery can be a direct Tire-Mount type TPMS design.
