Vishay Intertechnology offers a new AEC-Q100 certified ambient light sensor for automotive and consumer applications that require extremely high sensitivity to sense light through dark covering materials. Vishay Semiconductors VEML6031X00 provides a high sensitivity photodiode, low noise amplifier, 16-bit ADC and IR channel in a miniature, opaque 2.67mm x 2.45mm surface mount package with a low profile of 0.6mm.
This automotive-grade device allows the ambient light spectral sensitivity to be close to that of the human eye. The sensor provides detection of highly linear behavior from 0lx to 228klux-eliminating the need for correction formulas-while its resolution is as low as 0.0034lx/ct and can be operated in applications with low transmittance (dark) lens designs. The infrared channel of the device allows light source detection and sensitivity changes to compensate for lux errors.
The device provides a high operating temperature range of up to 110C and a rugged package with improved SNR. It can be used for display backlight control, rearview mirror dimming, internal lighting control systems, infotainment systems and head-up displays. The sensor supports an easy-to-use I²C bus communication interface for these applications and provides interrupt functions.
For applications that require multiple sensors, the flexible device supports multiple slave addresses, while an optional integration time as low as 3.125 milliseconds provides fast response time. The sensor provides excellent temperature compensation to maintain stability in the case of ambient temperature changes, and provides a low shutdown current consumption of 0.5μA (typ.).
The device's power supply voltage range is 2.5V to 3.6V, and the I²C bus voltage range is 1.7V to 3.6V. Compliant with RoHS, halogen-free and Vishay Green. According to J-STD-020, the equipment provides a moisture sensitivity level of 2a and a floor life of 4 weeks.
